Last month saw the release of What Went Down, the first single and more importantly, title track from Foals highly anticipated fourth album. It was angry, bold, brave and heavy but best of all, it was the return of Foals! Last night saw the premiere of second single, Mountain At My Gates and it’s an absolute blinder of a track. I must’ve listened to it about 20 times already.
Foals are well-known for their catchy guitar riffs and this one delivers straight away taking us back to the instantly catchy My Number. It’s a lot calmer than the first single and feels more like the Foals we’ve become accustomed to over the years. The riff was apparently recorded a while ago on Yannis’ phone with the lyrics coming later. It wasn’t until they got down to the recording of the song however that the words “I see a mountain at my gates” were spoken so fuck knows what it was going to be called initially. The track has the now infamous sound of Yannis’ brooding over the words yet making them feel full of emotion. He could sing the dictionary and it’d sound emotional.
If this track doesn’t get you excited for the album:
A) What the fuck is wrong with you?
B) I don’t know what will.
C) You have issues.
The best thought you can have when hearing a new song for the first time by a band you absolutely love is one that involves envisaging the song performed live and this is definitely a song that would fit seamlessly in to a Foals set-list. I hope I get to witness this for myself at some point. Until then, I’ll just have to stick this on repeat.
What Went Down is out 28th August.
