“Hello. It’s me…”

If you know me well, you’ll know that when it comes to music; I can’t stand Adele. I just think she’s a bit of a dick and not entirely appreciative of what she’s got. You’ll also know that I bloody love The Maccabees so when they were in the Live Lounge yesterday and decided to cover Adele’s new song, Hello; My dubious nature made me a little hesitant in listening to it.  Don’t get me wrong, I think a lot of Adele’s hits are well written and I’d like them if performed by anyone but her and…I know she’s a fan of The Maccabees and know she’d love this cover so part of me thinks we’d actually get on but…I don’t want to like her! Arrrgggghhhh!! Anyways, personal taste aside; I thought I’d just crack on with listening to it and put my dislike for Adele aside for a few minutes…

You’ll already know that I’m going to like this track because I struggle to say anything negative about the band I jokingly call “my boys” probably to the annoyance of my friends but that’s how I see them. I remember stumbling across their MySpace page in 2005 and I was instantly hooked and followed everything they’ve done in the 10 years since.

Whenever the band are in the live lounge, they provide some right treats. From the Home Alone melody to The Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow to the recent Lean On by Major Lazer; they make everything their own and it works incredibly well.

Even when they cover Adele.

The original version is obviously full of emotion and in a dramatic change of direction for Adele, not about a lost love for once. The Maccabees may have held back with the emotion somewhat and messed with the tempo but I love its indie-pop vibe. It sounds like it could be a genuine non-single track by The Maccabees and if this was the case, I’d be fully on board. I can’t wait for their next visit to the Live Lounge and because they’ve covered so many different types of genre, I have no idea what they’ll do next. Personally, I’d love to see them do a cover of the amazing Wicked Game by Chris Isaak; they’d make that song even more incredible than it already is. See you in November guys, let’s say ‘Hello’ to one another again.
