The rumour mill has been working overtime for the past couple of days and talks that one of the most outspoken and diverse bands of the late eighties and early nineties may just be reforming in 2017. In a time of somewhat political turmoil and dispute, a band that always served as an alternative commentary to life and sometimes an antidote to the monotonous and oppressive status quo, The KLF stood as not only a band but an anarchist group, an art form and the obscure, ugly side to an otherwise polished and pretty music scene at the end of the 80’s.
There return in 2017 could mean a number of things, with new music hopefully being one of them, but an onslaught of anarchic displays and movements towards a revolution may be about to follow, and in today’s political climate, it might not be a moment too soon. There doesn’t seem to have been any confirmation of this development for now, but be sure that if this is true, we’ll be reporting on it and then sitting back and watching the fireworks. Not only will it be a shake up for the political world, but a stagnant, media led music world could do with these guys being thrown in.
Not to say there aren’t acts out there now that are trying to bend the perceptions of modern music and drive it in directions it so longingly needs to go, but The KLF may be the ones to throw it right in the blender and smash the industry to bits. Having said that, will they have the power and stature that they once had, I’m sure there’s still a large following out there at this time but is it strong enough to make a difference. I hope so. 2017 could be the stage for change and since we’re only six days into January, what else might we see this year?
