We reported earlier this year how Bombay Bicycle Club frontman had gone his own way, reinventing himself under the moniker Mr Jukes, and releasing his own debut album, ‘God First’ back in July. Well, with the album now released and a string of material doing the rounds and garnering positive reactions all around, but in the past few days we’ve been treated to the music video for album track and new single ‘Leap Of Faith’ and it requires a mention all of its own. If not for the fact that track is jam packed with funk and soul and stands as one of the most infectiously brilliant tracks of the summer, but with the vocals of roots-reggae legend and Massive Attack alumni, Horace Andy as well as 90’s hip hop icons De La Soul who are performing next week at Lost Village Festival in Lincolnshire.
The track becomes a puzzle with many pieces, but Jukes has managed to put them together expertly and it’s a spellbinding listen, with each element complimenting the next and raising the profile of this project all together. Jack Steadman has put Bombay Bicycle Club on the shelf and pursued this new idea, and to a huge fan of the band, it was a shame to know that new music wouldn’t be coming any time soon as he involved himself with something new, but upon hearing the album and especially tracks like ‘Leap Of Faith’, the pain has subsided as ‘God First’ may just be one of the best albums of 2017, with its interesting fusions of jazz, funk, soul and hip-hop it’s actually been great to see Steadman unleash his musicianship on a wider scale and explore some other areas of the music both he, and I, love. Well done Mr Jukes, keep them coming. We’re loving it.
