Big news for fans of good time indie pop, as Liverdpudlian post punk trio The Wombats have returned with a brand new track as they prepare for the 2018 release of their fourth studio album. ‘Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life’ is The Wombats’ first record since 2015 and will be available from next February, but the lead single has been released and is doing the rounds to a generally positive reception. It’s not hard to see why either as a much more mature but still consistently fun and witty version of the band has returned and their sound appears to have benefitted from the evolution. ‘Lemon To A Knife Fight’ is a much more discrete track than some of the previous offerings from The Wombats and if you look back at the long list of hit tracks we’ve seen out of them, this does stand apart from them all in sound and style. As mentioned though, this is a welcome evolution and despite having a lot of things new about the band, the nostalgia fact is still a present element and will likely still draw fans, as well as keeping them happy.

The Wombats are one of those bands that made a huge imprint on the music scene upon their debut in 2007 and managed to maintain their spot on the modern music landscape for quite some time, but now it’s more likely that you’ll hear someone remembering them fondly rather than celebrating their current status and position, and it’s a rarity that you’ll meet a casual fan that knows any material that doesn’t feature on their first album, which frankly has a track listing that reads like a greatest hits but at the same time may have them appear a little bit of a one trick pony. So it’s truly exciting to see them return and unveil something as fresh and as brilliant as ‘Lemon To A Knife Fight’ and also begin to reintroduce themselves to the world. We’ll be keeping a close eye on The Wombats from now on and in particular we’ll be looking forward to the new album.
